		<description>(A5 book, 24 pages)

A book illustrating the perception of time during a countdown. It sums up most of the ideas that have been discussed during the countdown project including the illusion and tension of time and an intention to question the countdown behavior in a more graphical way.

&#60;img src="http://payload83.cargocollective.com/1/6/218675/3970756/Cheng-Han Wu_2fb-1.jpg" width="670" height="886" width_o="788" height_o="1043" src_o="http://payload83.cargocollective.com/1/6/218675/3970756/Cheng-Han Wu_2fb-1_o.jpg" data-mid="22645540"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The book has two parts. On the right pages it show the real speed of chronological time passing by; on those left pages it demonstrates a mental, distorted speed of time.

On many occasions, people often feel more relaxed in the beginning of a period of time no matter what it is for. Only when it comes to the final part do people start to feel the nervousness and anxiety. So the mental speed of time goes slower in the beginning and speeds up to catch the real pace of time in the end.

&#60;img src="http://payload83.cargocollective.com/1/6/218675/3970756/illusionbook_scan1 3-1forFB.jpg" width="670" height="487" width_o="841" height_o="612" src_o="http://payload83.cargocollective.com/1/6/218675/3970756/illusionbook_scan1 3-1forFB_o.jpg" data-mid="21708019"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

&#60;img src="http://payload83.cargocollective.com/1/6/218675/3970756/illusionbook_scan1 4-1forFB.jpg" width="670" height="487" width_o="841" height_o="612" src_o="http://payload83.cargocollective.com/1/6/218675/3970756/illusionbook_scan1 4-1forFB_o.jpg" data-mid="21707468"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

The more we know about time, the more likely that we may think of time as a sort of illusion which is generated by the brain. It is very similar to those optical illusions that cheated on our visual perception.

The passing of the perceptional seconds forms an eternal staircasse, which is actually an impossible figure. It looks reasonable in the first sight, but then we can easily find out that something has gone wrong. It looks real but not. It is the perception that makes it real. When the countdown is over, the perceptional time forms a completed illusional figure while the real time on the right pages fails with a gap left between 1 and 10. Time is something real, but our prception may not be.

&#60;img src="http://payload83.cargocollective.com/1/6/218675/3970756/illusionbook_scan1 5-1forFB.jpg" width="670" height="487" width_o="841" height_o="612" src_o="http://payload83.cargocollective.com/1/6/218675/3970756/illusionbook_scan1 5-1forFB_o.jpg" data-mid="21708233"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Why do people like to count down? Despite of some practical use, countdown is sometimes merely a means for entertainment. To question the countdown behavior, the numbers become a loop that goes in no direction. Count down as much as you can.

		<description>(A5 book, 32 pages)

A book for the understanding of the visual perception of time in a countdown. This book is a first try for using books as a media to talk about time perception in the countdown project.

When something is not yet going to happen, people tend to have no concern about it. As time goes by, we start to have a perception about the things and start to dedicate ourselves to it. When it comes to the final step, we can see the things clearly, but not enough time left.

In the last few seconds when something is going to be accomplished or about to take place, people wants to but cannot focus on the things itself. Instead, people are more mentally affeted by the limit of time. To illustrate this situation, the image is getting blurred while the number is becoming clearer during the final countdown for things.

		<description>(video installation, 272 x 186 mm)

A direct approach of visualizing time perception in a simple but meaningful way. By showing two numbers counting down in a loop, it reflects people's perception of time in a countdown. The number on the left is displaying in a mental speed of time and the one on the right is displaying in a real speed of time. This idea is widely applied in this project. Each timing of showing the numer is precisely arranged in a sequence. Some pauses are only 0.1 seconds while some longer ones can take up to 1.95 seconds. People perceive time as going slower in the beginning and faster in the end. The beauty of the tension of time is therefore visible.

&#60;img src="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/6/218675/3885546/mac_9600X300.gif" width="600" height="300" width_o="600" height_o="300" src_o="http://payload79.cargocollective.com/1/6/218675/3885546/mac_9600X300_o.gif" data-mid="20280746"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Starting from 10 together, ending at 0 together and starting from 10 again, the display of the two numbers are in their own speed but well synchronized to be both 11-second (from 10 to 0) long in a loop. That explains that even we perceive time with our own perception, the real interval itself never changes. This video is also challenging people's measurement of the length of one second. Some feedback showed that it is confusing to people's perception of the length of one second.
